What Is a Solenoid Valve? Working Principle Explained

published:2013-03-20 21:33:51 visits:849 source:Wuxi Huatong Pneumatic

A solenoid valve is an electromagnetically controlled valve used in industrial systems to regulate the direction, flow rate, speed, and other parameters of media such as water, oil, or air.

By integrating with different electrical circuits, solenoid valves enable precise and flexible control. Various types exist—safety valves, check valves, control valves, shut-off valves—each serving distinct roles in automation systems.

Basic Working Principle:
Inside the valve is a sealed chamber with ports connected to different fluid lines. A plunger (or spool) sits in the center, flanked by one or two electromagnetic coils. When a coil is energized, it attracts the plunger, opening or closing specific ports. This directs fluid into selected pathways, where pressure acts on a cylinder piston. The piston drives a rod, which in turn actuates mechanical devices. Thus, by switching the solenoid current on/off, mechanical motion is precisely controlled.
